Facts
A post-tension slab combines traditional slab reinforcement with additional high-strength steel tendons that are tensioned after the concrete sets. When a heavy load is applied to a structure, the concrete slab experiences tension, leading to cracks and deformation. To address this issue, post-tensioned steel tendons are placed during concreting and tensioned afterward along with conventional rebars. When these tendons are stressed, the concrete is compressed, increasing its compressive strength, while the pulled tendons enhance the tensile strength, resulting in an overall stronger concrete.
Soil swelling and contraction due to water contact also affect the integrity of concrete slabs. Unstable soils in Southwestern states and Mexico cause soil expansion issues, complicating the laying of concrete slabs. Builders use post-tension slabs to reduce the risks of cracking, contraction, and soil expansion, thereby strengthening the structural integrity of the element.
